The pair achieved great success while working together at Ajax and Barcelona, so de Boer is well placed to predict how his ex-boss will go about his business once he takes up the reins at Old Trafford.
De Boer helped Ajax win a hat-trick of Eredivisie titles in the Netherlands from 1994 to 1996, and was part of van Gaal’s youthful side that claimed the Champions League in 1995. The pair were reunited at Barcelona later in the decade and claimed the Spanish league title, while van Gaal’s first stint in charge of the Dutch national side saw him call on the attacking midfielder's services.
Now coaching with Ajax, de Boer spoke to MUTV for a forthcoming documentary analysing why van Gaal’s coaching style has helped him achieve success wherever he has gone.
“I think because he wants to be the best, but also he wants to speak the language, so he takes a course to speak the language quickly,” said the 44-year-old. “It’s the same in Spain, Germany, because he’s devoted in everything he does. He wants respect, of course, but he wants to have no doubts and express himself in the native language.
“He is such a perfectionist, he wants everything well organised – his planning, his training sessions – so he has a road map in front of him.”
