Vida: England can prosper

Nemanja Vidic believes England may surprise a few people at the World Cup finals because of reduced expectations for Roy Hodgson's side.

The departing Manchester United captain will be watching the global event unfold as a spectator before joining his new club Inter Milan and admits he is reluctant to make any major predictions regarding the eventual winners.

After England were heavily beaten 4-1 by Germany to round off a disappointing campaign in South Africa four years ago, United's contingent of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck will be targeting better this time, beginning with the group games against Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica.

"If you ask me about England, to be fair, I think they have more chance this year than last time," Vidic told

"Maybe they have better players and I think the environment around the national team is better with lower expectations and this will help the players. I think there is not the same kind of pressure from the media and, as they don’t expect too much, there is a chance to do something. I’m not saying they are going to win it but they could do well."

Vidic feels European teams could do well in Brazil but he worries for his next destination's prospects of winning the World Cup if former United colleague Giuseppe Rossi, who is in the 30-man provisional squad for Italy, is not back to full
