Van Persie hits stunner

Robin van Persie lit up the Netherlands' World Cup warm-up friendly against Antonio Valencia's Ecuador with a stunning equaliser.

Both Manchester United players captained their respective countries and it was the South Americans who started the better, taking the lead when Jefferson Montero sprung the Dutch offside trap to finish clinically.

Valencia impressed with his speed and power often utilised more centrally than it is at Old Trafford but his Reds team-mate van Persie stole the show with a sublime strike. Jordy Clasie's through ball was controlled by the striker on his chest and an instant left-footed volley whistled past Maximo Banguera.

It was a full-blooded affair at the Amsterdam Arena, shown live on MUTV, with Valencia booked after half an hour, and van Persie was withdrawn with 11 minutes remaining as Louis van Gaal's men operated a 3-5-2 formation rather than Holland's traditional 4-3-3 system. Ecuador's skipper lasted the full 90 minutes and looked in good shape ahead of the finals in Brazil.
