Rooney to be monitored

Wayne Rooney is doubtful for Manchester United's clash with Sunderland at Old Trafford but Robin van Persie could make his return from a knee injury.

Ryan Giggs, who claimed he is in the frame to be play himself despite his managerial duties, addressed the media at the Aon Training Complex and responded to rumours regarding Rooney's fitness. Van Persie, meanwhile, is pushing for inclusion after receiving treatment in his native Netherlands but obviously will not be risked until he is 100 per cent ready.

"A few of the lads have had a bug," revealed Giggs. "Wayne has and Anders [Lindegaard] has too. Wayne also has a tight groin. You have to be careful with the bug because the immune system is down a bit but Wayne, being Wayne, wants to play. We'll monitor it over the next 24 hours.

"Robin has been back training this week and has looked good. Whether tomorrow is too early, we'll just have to see how he goes today. He has looked really good this week."

The Black Cats include three former United defenders in their squad - Wes Brown, John O'Shea and Phil Bardsley.

"It's great to see Wes and Sheasy back and Phil," admitted Giggs. "The service those players gave to the club will never be forgotten. They were great players."
