United have contested 164 Manchester derbies, and yet while the Reds have faced the likes of Arsenal (215 matches), Liverpool (187), even Everton (186) and Chelsea (167), more frequently throughout history, battles with our blue neighbours date back further than any other geographic or trophy rivals.
On 3 October 1891, Newton Heath met Manchester City in an FA Cup 1st qualifying round tie in front of 11,000 fans at North Road. The Heathens won 5-1 and so began a football rivalry that has encompassed many ups and downs for both clubs, great goals, epic games, and many a hero and villain for Reds and Blues.
The rivalry goes much deeper than the trophy-chasing current squads we watch today. So United Uncovered’s latest infographic offers a glimpse into the history of the tie, picking out interesting facts and figures.
