Robin van Persie has already raced past the 20-goal mark in his debut season with the Reds, so it is an obvious statement to suggest that the flying Dutchman has made a big impact since joining from Arsenal – but when Gary Neville speaks of him in the same breath as Ruud van Nistelrooy, Eric Cantona and Wayne Rooney, you know that he is doing something special.
United Uncovered asked Gary – a club legend, top TV pundit and coach with England’s national team – what he has made to the Dutchman’s impressive start to life as a Red. “Robin has made a huge impact,” Gary told us. “You get that sense that United have signed a mature player, the finished article.
“He has taken the big games by the scruff of the neck. Chelsea, City, Tottenham, Liverpool… he scores in every big game. He delivers. It’s an incredibly good habit to have, to influence the big matches. That’s what makes you a great player.”
The Reds are in a strong position in the league and Neville feels that van Persie is essential to seeing the job through. “No one player ever wins a league, it takes a squad,” he adds. “But some seasons there are special performers and you would have to say he has been one of them.”
