Qualification to the last 16 came quickly this season – what was different to last term?
I just think last season was a disaster and this season we didn’t want to follow suit. We got hammered for it last year and rightly so. We had the mentality that we wanted to get qualification in the bag as quickly as possible, win our games and not take any chances.
Does the mindset change once the knockout stages begin?
Yeah, the mindset does change. It has to. It’s different football totally. It’s knockout football and you don’t have the chance to make up for a bad result over the course of two or three games further down the line. You’ve got to make sure you get your wins straight off the bat.
Do you enjoy playing in more pressured circumstances?
I love it. Your focus can’t be anywhere else at this stage of the competition. You can’t be thinking ‘we can afford to draw this game’ or whatever. It’s win and win at all costs. And that’s it. We all enjoy those high-pressure situations and it’s nothing that we’re not used to.
Sir Alex feels that, for a club of United's size and success, we should have more European titles to our name. Is that something the players feel to?
I think even in my time here we should have won at least another one [Champions League]. The one where we lost to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals [in 2010], we let that one go. As a player there are many different games that rankle. You think about those more than any other to be honest. It gets depressing if you sit down and think about it too much! But that’s just the way it is and I think players at a lot of clubs would look at it at
