United Uncovered spotlights the potential of Tom Thorpe, one of the outstanding players from the Under-21s' title-winning campaign in 2012/13...
Profile Local lad Thorpe has been associated with the club since the age of seven and skippered the FA Youth Cup-winning team in 2011. He had to be patient for much of the following campaign and was used in a holding midfield role before reverting back to his favoured central defensive slot in the Under-21s. A string of consistent performances anchoring the meanest of defences earned a worthy call-up to the England squad for the upcoming Under-20 World Cup in Turkey.
Style Although elegant in possession, and comfortable bringing the ball out from the back, he is also resilient and commanding in the air. Learned to sharpen up his game in midfield and looked one of the best players in the league with his authority and assured nature.
Moment Most of Thorpe's best work came in a defensive capacity, of course, but it would be churlish to ignore his wonder strike from long range during the 3-1 defeat at Spurs, a result avenged in the Under-21 final at Old Trafford when he lifted the league trophy as captain.
Quoted "It's quite fitting that the last trophy to be won under the boss here [at Old Trafford] was achieved in the way we came back [from 0-2 to win 3-2]. It was brilliant from the lads and there was a lot of belief. We knew our own faults led to their [Tottenham's] goals and that we could come out and make a difference in the second half." – Tom Thorpe, May 2013.
