United Uncovered profiles the Reds' promising Under-21 midfielder...
Name Joe Rothwell Age 19 Born Failsworth, Oldham Position Midfielder
Profile A local lad who has overcome illness and injury problems in his fledgling career to hold down a place in Warren Joyce’s Under-21 side this term. Joe is a well-balanced midfield operator who moves the ball quickly and efficiently and always looks to create space and openings. He joined United as a six-year-old and has worked his way through the age groups with real dedication, impressing the coaches with his attitude and aptitude.
Season His first goal at Reserves level came from the penalty spot, after he was fouled, in the recent Lancashire Senior Cup exit to Bolton Wanderers. A similarly cool spot-kick followed in the shootout, only for the Reds to bow out. Rothwell had already found the net in the UEFA Youth League win at Real Sociedad and gained valuable experience in Europe before cementing a place with the older age group.
Style A tidy, unfussy pivot in the middle of the park, Rothwell keeps possession and probes for openings. A change in pace allows him to dart into space, particularly in the channels, and he is capable of influencing the tempo in games. Having forged a fine partnership with good friend Ben Pearson, who is the more robust of the two, Joe can dominate key areas throughout the 90 minutes.
Quoted “Joe has a great burst of energy and can always surge through on goal. It’s something he has to work on because he can do that more often.” – Under-19s coach Nicky Butt.
