Papers: Three-horse race

Roo guns them down
Wayne Rooney has told Arsene Wenger his team are no-hopers in the title race. The Old Trafford star also dismissed Aston Villa’s chances, saying the champions will be Manchester United, Chelsea or Liverpool. Rooney said: “Arsenal are a good team but in the end I think it will be down to one of the top three and I think we are in a good position. We would have liked to have played those two matches we have in hand. But if we can get some good results in those games we will be in a really good position.” United will be just one point behind leaders Liverpool if they win their games in hand — at home to Wigan and Fulham. Roo added: “The title race could go down to goal difference so we need to score more.”

In other news, Dimitar Berbatov emerged from the ‘worst week of his life’ and insisted United can win the title. Having missed the Club World Cup triumph with a virus, Berba was delighted to fire the Reds to victory over Middlesbrough. “It’s always bad when you are not involved with the team. But it ended happily with the team winning the trophy and now we have taken two wins over Christmas."
