Papers: Berba aims high

Berba plans to top Ronaldo
Dimitar Berbatov has pledged to eclipse Cristiano Ronaldo as Europe’s greatest player. He also means to shake off the tag of being ‘lazy’. Ronaldo is odds-on to lift the Ballon D’Or in December. But this time next year, United new boy Berbatov aims to be the one with the award for Europe’s best. The Bulgarian striker said: “I will dream about winning the Golden Ball until I stop playing. When I set myself a target, I aim to reach it. With God’s will, I’ll achieve something big."

Berbatov is tipped to make his United debut in Saturday's trip to Anfield. The Merseysiders are eager to upset the Reds' applecart, with Javier Mascherano telling The Sun: “It’s a match we need to win if we want to compete for the title. The fans deserve it."

The Daily Mail speculates that Sir Alex Ferguson is 'sweating on' the fitness of Michael Carrick and Owen Hargreaves ahead of Saturday's clash. Liverpool, conversely, may be boosted by the return of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

Former Reds star Gary Pallister doubts Liverpool have what it takes to mount a sustained title challenge, regardless of Saturday's outcome, telling The Daily Star: “I can’t see them challenging this year. Under Benitez they’ve been playing for fourth spot. That’s not good enough for Liverpool fans."
