Papers: Pogatetz pilloried

Fergie rage at horror tackle
Alex Ferguson slammed Emanuel Pogatetz for his horror tackle on Rodrigo Possebon. Middlesbrough captain Pogatetz was sent off after his horror lunge left Possebon with blood running from his right leg and needing oxygen in this Carling Cup clash. Manchester United boss Fergie said: “It was a terrible tackle. I have seen a replay of it and I don’t want to see it again." Possebon, 19, had to be strapped to a stretcher and taken to hospital after the incident in the 65th minute of Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Boro at Old Trafford.

The other post-match talking point in the tabloids is Cristiano Ronaldo scoring on his first start this season - "Hot Ron's right back in the groove" (Daily Star). Meanwhile The Sun runs quotes on Ronaldo's future from Sir Alex's column in United Review.

Away from the Carling Cup, the big story is the fall-out from Carlos Tevez's time at West Ham in 2006/07. An independent commission has ruled that Tevez's ineligibility to play means the Hammers, who stayed up, owe compensation to Sheffield United, who went down. The latter are claiming £30m - the exact figure will be determined by a later tribunal.
