Rooney and Drogba fight it out
So who’s your money on? Which of the big boys is going to claim the honour? We are not talking Manchester United or Chelsea (although my pound is on the latter’s deeper squad prevailing), but Wayne Rooney or Didier Drogba for Footballer of the Year. We can, I think, safely reduce the shortlist to those two. Cesc Fabregas deserves a commendation, but it is Rooney and Drogba who lead the polls, as they do the goalscoring charts, by a fair distance. And like the title race itself, Drogba against Rooney should be a fascinating fight to the finish.
Matt Dickinson, The Times
Sticking with an awards theme, The Times also named young Reds centre-back Jonny Evans as their Player of the Weekend.
The Daily Star says that a United reunion with David Beckham could be in doubt for the Reds' Champions League visit to Milan next week. Milan have struggled for form of late, and Becks was dropped for Sunday's 0-0 draw with Bologna.
Michael Carrick says Reds team-mate Rio Ferdinand will make the perfect England skipper. He said: "Rio's a terrific leader and a terrific captain. He's a world-class player. He's done it in the Champions League final and won it, so it won't faze him in that respect."
