Papers: No new ban for boss

Sir Alex to escape FA rap
Sir Alex Ferguson will escape punishment over his criticism of referee Mark Clattenburg. Manchester United had midfielder Darren Fletcher sent off for two bookable offences during their 1-1 draw at Birmingham on Saturday. And boss Fergie fumed: "I've not seen a softer sending off for a long time. It's ridiculous." But an FA spokesman confirmed last night: "No action will be taken."

United are lining up a bid for Fiorentina goalkeeper Sebastian Frey as a replacement for Edwin van der Sar, according to the Daily Mail. The Dutchman may consider retirement at the end of the season, and Sir Alex reportedly eyes Frey as the ideal man to step in to his shoes.

In other rumours, Sir Alex will back Qatar’s bid for the 2022 World Cup, having been impressed during the Reds’ training camp in Doha this week. The Guardian also reports that the Glazers are considering the sale (ans subsequent lease back to the club) of Carrington.
