Papers: Reds in for Ribery?
Bayern winger is on Sir Alex's wishlist
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson
will discuss a £40 million summer move for Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery
when the two clubs meet in the Champions League this week. The French midfielder has been on Ferguson’s radar for a couple of seasons and although the odds are shortening on the 26-year-old ending up in Spain, Sir Alex will be in Germany this week fighting for his signature. The Champions League quarter-final gives him the chance of registering the former Marseille star whose contract runs out next year. With the player having snubbed talks over a new deal, Bayern are resigned to cashing in on their talisman.John Richardson, Daily Express
In other transfer gossip, Alan Nixon of the Mirror
links the Reds, not for the first time, with Schalke’s goalkeeper Manuel Neuer
as a long-term replacement for Edwin van der Sar. According to Nixon, United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele
was sent to watch the German stopper, who would cost around £10m, at the weekend.
United youngster Tom Cleverley is also said to be in high demand. The Daily Mail reports that Cleverley, currently on loan at Watford, is a loan target for Bolton, Preston and Birmingham next season.
The Manchester Evening News quotes Gary Neville’s praise of Dimitar Berbatov after the Bulgarian’s brace on Saturday. MEN journalist Stuart Mathieson says Berbatov has been a man-of-the-match candidate for his outings as a lone striker at both Wolves and Bolton.
