Phil Thomas writes in The Sun…

Kenny’s in a fight for Jones

The Liverpool boss was at Ewood Park on Monday to watch the England Under-21 centre-back in action against Manchester City. But the Kop face a battle for the youngster, who has become one of the most wanted youngsters in the game. Manchester United’s interest is long established – they made inquiries last summer, with a view to a definite move in the close season. Boss Fergie will have money to spend and sees Jones as the ideal long-term partner for Chris Smalling, 21. The pair have impressed in the heart of defence for England’s Under-21s while Jones can also play as a midfielder.

In more transfer speculation, the Daily Mail carries a story linking Wesley Sneijder with a move to United, after the midfielder hinted at a move in an interview with a Dutch radio station. Sneijder is quoted: “Do I want to go to United? It’s a beautiful club. I’m fine in Milan and not at the point to think.” The same paper also claims the Reds are about to sign young French defender Raphael Varane from Lens for £3.7million.

The papers are obviously filled with reaction to United’s Champions League semi-final first leg win over Schalke on Tuesday night. And the pun-writers were out in force today with The Sun opting for ‘We Schal not be moved’ while The Mirror chose ‘The old and the Neu’ – a reference to the impressive performances of both Ryan Giggs and German stopper Manuel Neuer.
