United to reward Giggs with new contract
Manchester United are to open contract talks with Ryan Giggs within the next month in an attempt to secure the 37 year-old to a new one-year deal at Old Trafford. Giggs, who made his 600th league appearance for United in Sunday’s 0-0 draw at Tottenham Hotspur, has just six months left to run on his present contract. The Welshman is approaching the 20th anniversary of his senior United debut in March, but having made 18 appearances for Sir Alex Ferguson’s team this season, the club’s chief executive, David Gill, has admitted that talks are planned to reward the veteran with a contract that will take him beyond his 38th birthday. Gill said: “I wouldn’t be surprised if he extends his contract for another season. That will be addressed in the next month or so. He has been playing well, keeps himself in great shape and is a wonderful advert for the modern footballer.”
The Daily Express quotes Dimitar Berbatov on his pursuit of the Golden Boot award as well as the league title. The United striker has responded well to Sir Alex Ferguson’s demand for more goals, netting 14 times this season. Berbatov said: “I just hope I can stay on the top until the end of the season because the competition is really strong. Obviously the goals I score help the team to win points, which is the most important thing.”
Meanwhile, Reds legend Eric Cantona has made a shock return to football – as Director of Soccer at the New York Cosmos. The Sun quotes: “It’s a big project, a wonderful project. The Cosmos are very strong, beautifully made, with a great past. It’s kind of a mix between football and art.”
