Hernandez gets mega-pay rise
Manchester United will speed up their contract talks with Javier Hernandez in a bid to secure his long-term future at Old Trafford. The ‘Little Pea’ made a huge impact in his first season, scoring 20 goals to help the club land a record 19th league title. His exploits have attracted attention from a host of Europe’s top clubs, including Real Madrid and Inter Milan. United were considering offering him a new deal in six months’ time, but will now bring talks forward to make sure there is no danger of him leaving. The Mexican international has proved a huge hit in America, where United are currently on their summer tour. Hernandez, 23, is one of the most popular United stars and club officials realise his marketing value to sponsors is on a par with his skills on the pitch. Boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants to reward him with a new £60,000-a-week deal and expects Hernandez to put pen-to-paper before the start of the season.
The Star also carry an interview with Danny Welbeck, who admits he draws inspiration from Chicharito. "What Javier did shows you that if you're in form, the manager plays you - and he is always going to give youth a chance as well," said Welbeck. "Javier was not starting most of the games at the start of the season but he was in the side later and was on top form."
