Pics: Sir Alex's special day

Wes Brown's first half own goal proved to be the difference when United met Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, but the day belonged to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The United manager was given a guard of honour by both teams before the game in tribute to his 25th anniversary. He was then greeted by chief executive David Gill in the centre circle who revealed the club's incredible tribute to the boss as the North Stand was unveiled as the 'Sir Alex Ferguson Stand.'

The boss told MUTV afterwards how he was totally overwhelmed by the gesture.

"I was really emotional, I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t expect that and I have to thank the club for that," said Sir Alex. "It’s fantastic of them to do that and I’m really proud of it.

"I didn’t know a thing about it. [Assistant manager] Mike Phelan knew about it but never told me, so he’s sacked; he’s out the door! I had no idea at all and my family didn’t know anything about it."

Always a man for looking forward, rather than back, the manager added: "I’m glad it’s all over – we can kick on now."
