Papers: Scrap for Garcia

The Daily Mail writes
United face battle with AC Milan over Garcia

Manchester United face stiff competition if they want to sign Javi Garcia from Benfica, with Italian giants AC Milan also preparing to make a move. With Sir Alex Ferguson still looking for central midfielders, Garcia is seen as the man at Old Trafford and United have been linked with making a £17 million move. And Milan are now ready to make their own offer, according to reports in Portugal.

The Daily Star carry quotes from Basel star Xherdan Shaqiri, who criticises the Reds for the performance over the two legs against the Swiss champions: “United underestimated us. You could feel it in the tunnel and even in the warm- up. They weren’t fully focused and I’m not sure a United player made one sprint. Afterwards, you couldn’t even swap shirts – they were gone that quickly.” Shaqiri’s stinging attack is a sharp reminder to United of what failure feels like ahead of Ajax’s visit. Fergie insists he wants to win the Europa League but won’t accept any more lacklustre displays.

The newspapers all carry Sir Alex's press conference quotes ahead of the tie with Ajax, including the manager's belief that the Barclays Premier League is still the best in the world, and suggest Stuart Pearce will pick several of United's younger players for England's friendly with Holland. The squad is announced on Thursday morning.
