The Croxteth-born attacker scored both of the Reds' goals in quickfire fashion after the break, volleying home when a Ryan Giggs corner fell invitingly for him and then slipping a calm finish under Pepe Reina from Antonio Valencia's pass.
There were exceptional performances all over the pitch as United held on to a deserved 2-1 success but Rooney was the outstanding contributor and was only denied a hat-trick when a foul was called against Jonny Evans before the striker lashed the ball into the net. Wayne also prodded wide after a classic dummy by Paul Scholes.
Half of the ManUtd.com readers registering a vote plumped for Rooney with in-form winger Valencia the only team-mate to come anywhere close to him in the final reckoning. Scholes, Danny Welbeck and Jonny Evans, who all enjoyed impressive outings, collected plenty of votes with Michael Carrick further behind in the pecking order.
Supporters took to our forum Talking Reds to praise Wayne's display with one poster, George Osborne, writing: "Like I said in my post about sticking Rooney back in your Fantasy League teams, I think this is the beginning of his second purple patch of the season, where he will just be a machine. He's back."
