Juve been warned
Juventus are turning up the heat on Arsenal over Robin van Persie. The Italian champions' general manager, Guiseppe Marotta, has made it clear that van Persie is their number one priority - but also hinted they will switch their attentions to Manchester City misfit Edin Dzeko unless they get an answer quickly. Juventus, who have had a cheeky £8million opening gambit inevitably turned down, have now told the Gunners they will pay around £20m and are also offering van Persie £190,000-a-week AFTER tax. The Dutch striker, who turns 29 next month and is entering the final year of his contract, is keen on joining the Italian champions, and Juventus are clearly trying to push Arsenal into a swift decision with Marotta's mention of Dzeko as an alternative. Van Persie, who has missed the club's Asia pre-season tour, is believed to also prefer Manchester United to the remaining suitors, Manchester City. Arsenal are determined to hold out for £20m, a stance which may discourage United and leave Juve in pole position if they do come back with a firm offer.
As Great Britain's football team prepare to kick-off their bid for Olympic gold at Old Trafford, Tom Cleverley tells The Mirror that the Games can be a springboard for him. “I was disappointed not to make the England squad for the Euros,” he said. "Now, hopefully I can impress in the Olympics and Sir Alex Ferguson and Roy Hodgson will be watching."
Team GB's skipper, Ryan Giggs, tells The Sun: “To get the chance to play in a tournament at such a late stage of my career is obviously one I’m excited about and looking forward to. An Olympic gold would be up there with my European medals."
Finally, The Telegraph claims that United's Euro 2012 representatives - Wayne Rooney, Nani, Ashley Young, Phil Jones, Patrice Evra and Danny Welbeck - are due back at Carrington today, and Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed: “The players who start training on Thursday will certainly be involved in the games in Norway, Sweden and Hannover.”
