Vidic, out injured since early December with knee ligament damage, told us he was on course for a July return. But it's his praise of Jonny Evans that The Mirror have focused on.
United's Vidic praises stand-in
Nemanja Vidic has hailed Jonny Evans for filling the void during the Manchester United skipper's enforced absence. Vidic was ruled out for the season in December after suffering cruciate knee ligament damage during United's Champions League exit to Basel. Evans has stepped up to the plate to become Rio Ferdinand's regular central defensive partner in the absence of Vidic, who praised the way his replacement had handled the situation. The Northern Ireland international's United future looked uncertain after some poor performances last season, but Sir Alex Ferguson kept faith with him and has been vindicated. "Jonny has been playing really well in the last few games," said Vidic. "It's good for the team to have stability at the back and is the way to win the title." Evans scored his first United goal in Sunday's 5-0 rout at Wolves and Vidic said: "I remember when I scored my first goal for United. It's a nice feeling and Jonny has come up from the youth team, so it's his dream and it's nice for him. I think they [United's young defenders] are doing very well. If you look at their age and the expectation we have from them, it wasn't that high, but they turned out to be important players for the team."
