Papers: Vidic back in training

The Mirror's David McDonnell writes...

Vidic back in full training
Nemanja Vidic is back in full training with Manchester United and could return to first-team action within a fortnight. The United skipper has been out of action since late September after undergoing a meniscus operation on the same knee that saw him miss most of last season. Vidic has experienced no problems or setbacks since he began training with the United first-team squad and has impressed the club's medical staff with his progress. The 31-year-old defender was given an initial return date of late November, but Sir Alex Ferguson then revealed he did not expect his captain back until around Christmas. But Vidic is ahead of schedule in his rehab programme and eyeing a pre-Yuletide comeback to give United a huge boost for the second half of the season.

In the Daily Star, Michael Carrick says United must be more ruthless to ensure title success this season. “We are quite satisfied, but we had a spell about a year or two ago when we were starting games really well and killing teams off really early. We want to get back to that because Old Trafford is a difficult place to play when you go a goal down.”

In the Daily Mail, Sir Bobby Charlton reveals he has been giving Wayne Rooney some top tips: “I have the opportunity to chat with him on a pretty much weekly basis and he’s a good listener. We talked about scoring goals from long-range and I told him not to worry about exact placement but to keep a mental picture in his mind of where that rectangle is - and to batter the bloody ball!”

Reading boss Brian McDermott is quoted in the Daily Express talking about his surprise at a phone call he received from Sir Alex earlier this year. “I spoke to him about something I needed to address and he was very helpful and gave good advice. He’s the same with all managers.”
