Papers: England need Rio

David Anderson writes in The Sun...

Pallister backs Rio for Three Lions
Roy Hodgson has made a mistake by snubbing Rio Ferdinand, claims Gary Pallister. Former England and Manchester United centre-half Pallister says Hodgson should not have shunned 81-cap modern-day Old Trafford defender Ferdinand - especially in the wake of his long-term back-four partner John Terry's international retirement. Pallister reckons Ferdinand could still do a job for Roy Hodgson, even though he will soon turn 34. “I watch Rio every other week, and I think he's still a class apart,” said Pallister. “And I think Roy has probably got it wrong. For me, Rio should still be in the squad. You have lost a vast amount of experience in there with John Terry's retirement and I think that Rio still has a lot to offer the England cause. We didn't look so great at the back in the last internationals. Of course, Rio has lost some pace - and he's going to lose it because he's coming up to his 34th birthday. I played alongside Steve Bruce, and he was the first to say he didn't have great pace, but it was all about reading the game - the timing of a tackle, being in the right at the right time.”

The Sun says Newcastle are “fuming after the FA let Robin van Persie off the hook over his elbow storm.” The Toon are apparently stunned RvP will face no inquiry for seemingly catching Yohan Cabaye on Sunday because referee Howard Webb admitted missing the incident during United’s 3-0 win, insisting there was no case to answer after studying video footage yesterday.

Elsewhere, the Daily Mail claims Birmingham City want to ditch Ravel Morrison, saying boss Lee Clark has run out of patience with the former United starlet - less than three months after signing him on a 12-month loan from West Ham.
