Papers: Roo can be Cantona

Martin Lipton writes in The Mirror...

I’ll be England’s Cantona
Wayne Rooney wants to become an England inspiration - like Eric Cantona was at Manchester United. Modern-day United star Rooney accepts that his international career so far has been one of under-achievement, after another disappointing display when he finally made his Euro 2012 bow. But with John Terry no longer around, Rio Ferdinand overlooked by Roy Hodgson and both Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in the twilight stages of their international careers, Rooney said he hopes to become a totemic figure for the next generation. Rooney said: “I hope it is time for me to show I am a senior player and that I can lead the team. I understand the scrutiny I'm under and I have no problems with that. Hopefully in the near future we will be coming out of a tournament and you will all be praising me because we have won a trophy. That would be great for everyone. It's especially important now, when we have a lot of young players in the squad. I always try to speak to them and offer advice. I always remember what Sir Alex Ferguson says about how Eric Cantona was such a big help to the younger players at United.”

The Daily Mail says United chief executive David Gill will replace Sir Dave Richards as vice-chairman of The FA, with a view to gaining a place on the UEFA executive committee. The rubber stamping of Gill’s future role will go before the next FA Council meeting after Richards, who is slowly relinquishing his myriad of football positions, volunteered to stand down.

Elsewhere, The Sun reports Anders Lindegaard has pulled out of the Denmark squad after feeling a twinge in his ankle. The move is a precaution after the keeper was forced to sit it out from January to the end of last season with ligament damage.
