Papers: Clever comparison

James Robson writes in the Manchester Evening News...

Cleverley is a chip off the old Beck
With the clothing line, website and reality star girlfriend, Tom Cleverley has all the makings of the modern-day football icon. They are also the sort of trappings that would have traditionally set alarm bells ringing in Sir Alex Ferguson’s mind. The United manager, however, has no concerns about his latest starlet – and nor does Roy Hodgson. Ferguson, who despaired of David Beckham’s ‘fashion’ status, has another potential home-grown superstar on his hands – and an expectant nation is already daring to dream about what Cleverley can do for England. Just as Beckham emerged as a force for his country in the aftermath of Euro 96, the 23-year-old has been thrust onto the international stage following this summer’s European Championships. That his competitive debut came against Moldova – the same opposition as Beckham faced on his first appearance for his country – is just another reason to prompt comparisons with the ex-England captain.

The Mirror claims United have asked Nani to forget about his contract negotiations and focus instead on matters on the pitch. The Portuguese winger had been linked with a surprise move to Zenit St Petersburg throughout the summer.

Elsewhere, many of today’s papers say Jonny Evans has risked the wrath of Sir Alex Ferguson by admitting he played through the pain barrier for Northern Ireland last Friday. However, as ManUtd.com reported on Monday, the defender has quashed any fears of an injury scare.
