Cleverley's delight for Danny

Tom Cleverley says he was delighted his good friend Danny Welbeck netted Manchester United's crucial away goal against Real Madrid last week, even if he wasn't on the pitch himself to join in the celebrations.

Cleverley was an unused substitute in the 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu, so watched from the bench as Welbeck peeled away from his marker, Sergio Ramos, to head the Reds in front after just 20 minutes.

It was only the striker's second goal of the season, but Cleverley insists Danny's team-mates judge him on more than just his goal return.

"He’ll be happy with that goal and it’s a very important one for us," Tom told MUTV.

"He’s not scored as many as he did last year but we know he does other things for the team that are just as important. I don’t think anybody’s really worried about that [his lack of goals]."

Despite not making it onto the pitch in Spain, Cleverley says he enjoyed the Real Madrid experience and knows his time will come as United now enter a busy period, playing five games in 20 days.

"It’s the first time I’ve been to the Bernabeu and it’s always good to experience these historical grounds," he said.

"It was a good experience for me even though I didn’t play, which I’d have liked to. But you can’t beat going to these places with two massive clubs in the world clashing with each other.

"As a footballer, you want to play every game. If you can’t play, you want to be ready to come on off the bench.

"I think that’s the good thing about this squad – no-one is an individual. We’re all in it together and fully understand that.

"We’ll take every game as it comes. We’re in three tournaments and doing well in them all. I think we need a good squad.
