Papers: Lampard linked

The Sun's Neil Custis writes...

Fergie wants Frank

Manchester United want Frank Lampard and the Chelsea star is ready to move to Old Trafford. Lampard has been told he is no longer wanted at Stamford Bridge, with his contract set to run out in the summer. United manager Alex Ferguson is convinced the veteran midfielder, 34, can still do a job at the very highest level. He is a long-time admirer of the player and tried to get him before he even joined Chelsea. It is unlikely a deal will be done this month — when a fee would be involved — while Lampard is also keen to see out the rest of the season at Stamford Bridge. But United are prepared to offer him a one-year deal in the summer, with the promise of a second year if everything goes well.

In further transfer gossip, the Daily Mail is linking United with a move for Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. Reports in Turkey claim a £14m offer has been made. The Independent, meanwhile, reports that Crystal Palace or undecided whether to sell highly-rated 20-year-old attacker Wilfried Zaha this month, with United and Tottenham said to be interested.

The Daily Mirror reports that Wayne Rooney could make his return from a knee injury in United's FA Cup replay against West Ham.

The same paper says United turned down a £5m offer for defender Zeki Fryers from Tottenham last summer as debate over his registration with the White Hart Lane club continues.
