United plotting move for 'new Makelele'
Manchester United are keen on Monaco midfielder Nampalys Mendy. The 20-year-old has stunned Monaco by revealing that he intends to leave the club as a free agent this summer. Mendy, often compared to former France international Claude Makelele, was a regular under Claudio Ranieri as he helped Monaco secure promotion back to Ligue 1. Ranieri said: "I do not understand his attitude. As soon as I saw him play, I said here is our Makelele. I trusted him and I played him. I think he will miss out on a great deal. But it's his life, not mine. He has preferred to listen to his brother and agent and not his coach. It's a shame." The France U21 international has attracted attention from Nice but is keen to speak to United and visit the Carrington training ground.
The same piece claims Monaco continue to show interest in Reds winger Nani who, the Daily Mail claims, "will make a decision on his future in the next few days with Galatasaray also keen".
Elsewhere, David Moyes has received backing from one of his former Everton players, Seamus Coleman. The Ireland international says: "[Moyes] has done so well with Everton over the last 10 years – top eight every year with maybe not the budget everyone else has. He always manages to pick up good players."
The Manchester Evening News report that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has gone public with his assertion that Cristiano Ronaldo wants to remain at Real Madrid. Perez says "the player wants that... without a shadow of a doubt".
