Sir Bobby: I’d love Ronaldo return
Sir Bobby Charlton admits he would love to see Cristiano Ronaldo back in a Manchester United shirt.
SunSport revealed at the weekend that United were meeting with Nike officials to plot a mega bid for the Real Madrid star. An Old Trafford return would cost at least €75million and reunite Ronaldo with Wayne Rooney, who Alex Ferguson has vowed will be a United player next season. And speaking at the Laureus Sports Awards in Rio last night, United director Charlton admitted: “Any great player would be welcomed back but Cristiano went beyond being just a great player. He scores phenomenal goals, loves the club and was just the right sort of player at Manchester United. I’m a fan of him like anyone else and on a personal level I would like to see him back. I can’t say anything more than that.” Nike representatives flew in to London to talk about the renewal of their shirt sponsorship agreement with the Red Devils but top of their agenda was talks about how they could help the club get Ronaldo. Nike is desperate to get the Portuguese star back to the biggest football club that wear their logo.
In more transfer speculation, Ian Ladyman of the Daily Mail claims Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric wants to join United. In an exclusive story, the renowned journalist writes: “The diminutive midfielder is not in a rush to quit Real but did let it be known when in Manchester last week that he would be very keen on a future switch to Old Trafford.”
Meanwhile, the Independent says Roy Hodgson is considering recalling Rio Ferdinand to the England team as a result of injuries to several key players, potentially ending the Reds defenders’ two-year absence from the international set-up.
