After a promising maiden season at Old Trafford, Büttner enjoyed his first action of the 2013/14 campaign by playing the full 90 minutes of the 1-0 Capital One Cup victory over Liverpool. His efforts in helping United keep a clean sheet earned him another start in the following game against West Brom.

October 2013 
The Dutch defender spoke of his desire to add more silverware to the Barclays Premier League medal he had already won at Old Trafford, targeting the League Cup. "As a player you want to win every game and every trophy you can and this cup is important for us," Büttner told United Review. He then helped the Reds book a quarter-final spot in the competition with a 4-0 win over Norwich City.

November 2013
Büttner’s solitary appearance came in the closing stages of the memorable 5-0 win at Bayer Leverkusen. The left-back came on as a substitute for Patrice Evra and played the final 20 minutes in Germany.

December 2013
