Fletcher continued his recovery from ulcerative colitis, which had kept him out of action since Boxing Day 2012. During the off-season he explained he was closing in on a return to full training, telling the BBC: "Everything is going to plan so far and I am not that far away now."
After many months on the sidelines, the Scot made his long-awaited return as an overage player in the Under-21s' 2-2 draw with Fulham. He played 67 minutes and paid tribute to the club staff for their role in his comeback. "They’ve been great, especially the doc Steve McNally," Fletch told ManUtd.com. "He’s worked closely with me, getting myself right and back, and the support from the club has been fantastic – from Sir Alex Ferguson to [David Moyes] and David Gill. Everyone at the club. I couldn’t ask for anything better."
Fletcher took another important step on his road to recovery at the beginning of the month, as he played his first full 90 minutes of the season in the Under-21s’ 1-0 defeat at home to Stoke City.
