Varela officially became the first signing of David Moyes' reign when he switched from Penarol. "I’m very pleased to be a part of this club, one of the best teams in the world," he said. His arrival at Old Trafford was delayed as he helped Uruguay to reach the final of the Under-20 World Cup, where they were beaten on penalties by France. He made his debut in a pre-season friendly as a United XI won 4-2 at Ramsbottom. Eleven days later he featured for the Under-21s for the first time against Liverpool. Varela showed himself to be a creative presence in Warren Joyce’s side early on, providing three assists in his first seven games.

November 2013
Varela continued to develop in his early days at Old Trafford, playing the full 90 minutes for Joyce’s side during a 1-0 defeat at home to Stoke City at the beginning of the month.

December 2013
The Uruguayan’s education continued with United’s Under-21s, for whom he made one appearance this month, playing all 90 minutes of the 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers.

Varela was granted compassionate leave to return to his native Uruguay at the
