Having found the net twice against the A-League All Stars during pre-season, Lingard continued his prolific form, scoring crucial goals for the Under-21s against Manchester City in the Lancashire Senior Cup and against old foes Liverpool in the league. He also made his first appearance for England Under-21s in a friendly with Scotland.
Lingard joined Championship side Birmingham City on a month’s loan in mid-September and his debut was nothing short of spectaular. He scored all four of his side’s goals, a bout that included a 13-minute hat-trick, in a 4-1 triumph over Sheffield Wednesday, as he announced himself in style.
Another goal, this time during a 4-0 win against Millwall, took Lingard’s tally to five in three matches, and his superb start was rewarded when Birmingham extended the loan deal until December.
