The month was a write-off for Evans, who injured an ankle in the pre-season friendly against AIK in Sweden and was forced to watch the start of the competitive campaign from the sidelines. He returned to action for United’s Under-21s in a win over West Brom late in the month, and was praised by coach Warren Joyce for his "focused, positive and aggressive" display as an example to his younger team-mates.
Evans added two more Northern Ireland caps at the start of the month in the defeats at home to Portugal and away to Luxembourg. His first start of the season for United finally came in the Capital One Cup win over Liverpool, where he partnered Chris Smalling in central defence.
A bad start to the month saw Evans sent off late on in Northern Ireland’s defeat away to Azerbaijan, but things improved on the domestic front for the defender. His partnership with Phil Jones in three unbeaten games gave David Moyes an excellent alternative in the absence of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, and boded well for the future.
