gradually began to show his unquestionable class. Unfortunately, a collarbone injury sustained at the end of March 2007 kept him out of the title run-in, but his performances had already inspired a rousing song from the fans.

The Serbian soon returned to full fitness and his impressive performances earned him a contract extension in 2007. He said of the improved deal: "Playing in this team is a great privilege. I hope I can do my bit to bring the club even more trophies in the years ahead."

True to his word, Vidic assisted United's Premier League and Champions League double in 2007/08, before helping to retain that top-flight crown the following season while also lifting the League Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. Notably, he also took home two Player of the Year awards, as voted by fellow professionals and fans.

Injury and an ever-changing back four prevented Nemanja from bettering those achievements in 2009/10, though a new four-year deal soon arrived, quickly followed by the announcement that he would succeed Gary Neville as United's club captain, which he described as "a huge honour".
