departure of manager Coyle. His goal against Derby on 1 December was not enough to prevent a 3-1 defeat, which proved to be Coyle’s final game in charge of the FA Cup holders, who sacked the Scot just a few hours later. The United loanee carried on regardless for new boss Uwe Rosler, starting six of Wigan’s remaining seven games that month, including the end of their European hopes at the end hands of NK Maribor. Two more goals followed before the curtain came down on 2013, a spectacular bicycle kick in the 3-2 win over Bolton and the second of two early Latics goals that helped set up a 2-1 win at Reading.

January 2014
Powell played six times for Wigan in January and continued his impressive form in front of goal, netting twice against MK Dons to help the FA Cup holders reach the fourth round of the competition.

February 2014
A hamstring injury forced Powell to sit out the entire month, during which a string of wins gave the Latics hope of a push for an instant return to the Barclays Premier League.

March 2014
