Jones started all three of United’s matches in August, showing his trademark versatility by playing in central defence in the Community Shield win over Wigan and then at right-back in the opening two fixtures of the Barclays Premier League title defence. There was also a brief substitute appearance for England in the 3-2 win over Scotland.
An ankle injury forced Jones off in the loss to Liverpool and sidelined him until the two teams met again, this time a 1-0 win for United in the Capital One Cup at Old Trafford.
Jones’ good early-season form led him to be compared favourably to the legendary Duncan Edwards by ex-Busby Babe and former Reds boss Wilf McGuinness. The England international featured in all six of United’s fixtures during the month, mostly at centre-back with both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic absent at times. However, his superb volleyed goal against Norwich, just his third for the Reds, capped an impressive display in central midfield.
