“As we like to do, we sign young players with potential. We can also develop players well here. That’s proved to be the case many times. Hopefully the boy will enjoy it coming here when he eventually does join us in the summer.”

Shortly before, his development and promise had caught the eye of England manager Roy Hodgson, who decided to hand the youngster his international debut during a friendly defeat to Sweden in November.

Zaha made his United debut in the FA Community Shield win over Wigan that started the 2013/14 campaign, and made his next start in the 4-0 win over Norwich in the League Cup in October. A second England cap came along in a friendly win over Scotland at Wembley.

With fierce competition for places in the United team, Zaha was loaned to Cardiff in January 2014 after making four appearances for the Reds. He played 13 times for the Welsh club, managed by former United favourite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but despite his best efforts Zaha could not prevent the Bluebirds from suffering relegation. Nevertheless, the experience the youngster gained during a testing time in south Wales will stand him in good stead for the future.
