Formerly on the books of Preston North End, his hometown club, he joined United in 2008.
A creative central midfielder who caught the eye with one outrageous piece of skill in the 2011 Milk Cup, he clearly has plenty of ability in abundance. Due to the competition for places, he was often initially used at full-back and managed to make 11 starts in 2011/2012 and contributed plenty going forward as well as in defence.
However, he nailed down a regular starting spot in his preferred midfield position in 2012/2013 and proved a key contributor to Paul McGuinness' side. A strong runner, he keeps possession with his neat, economical passing and is always capable of bursting through to make things happen.
Another to be introduced into Warren Joyce's plans, he is held in high regard by McGuinness and was in the frame for the Young Player of the Year award, with the coach stressing that, although some fans may view him as an unsung hero, his work was at a consistently high level all season.
Capped by England at Under-16 and Under-18 level, he was able to parade his talents in the UEFA Youth League at either full-back or in midfield.
