Pierluigi Gollini was signed from Fiorentina but a broken leg delayed his registration at United.
The young goalkeeper made his debut in March of his first year in England against Stoke City and made five appearances towards the tail-end of the campaign.
With competition for the gloves fierce - five different keepers were used by Paul McGuinness in 2011/2012 - he was disappointed to make a mistake that cost the Reds three points at Huddersfield Town but bounced back with admirable spirit to perform impressively in the matches against Blackburn Rovers
and Stoke City.
As he has a huge frame for his age and is a big presence, it was interesting to note his development as he gained in stature throughout the 2012/2013 campaign - making more appearances than any other keeper at Under-18 level and also enjoying a couple of outings for the successful Under-21/Reserves group.
Clearly highly regarded in his homeland as well, Gollini captained Italy's Under-19 side at the start of the new season and turned in some eye-catching displays in the UEFA Youth League.
