United got off to the perfect start in the defence of the Manchester Senior Cup with a 2-0 victory at Bury.
Goals from Magnus Eikrem and Tom Cleverley earned the Reds a deserved win at a rain-lashed Gigg Lane and helped maintain the unbeaten run under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
United were always in control of proceedings with Ben Foster a virtual spectator throughout. Chris Mason headed Bury's only meaningful effort, after 25 minutes, off target.
By that point the visitors were already a goal to the good after Eikrem had curled an excellent free-kick round the wall from just outside the box on 16 minutes.
United were rarely out of second gear after the break, and sealed the win on 65 minutes through Tom Cleverley who finished neatly after a good passing move involving Richard Eckersley and Eikrem. It was easily the best bit of football of the match.
With the Carling Cup tie with Middlesbrough coming up later this month, a watching Sir Alex Ferguson will have been given plenty of food for thought after a solid team display from United's young charges.
