Manchester United finished in fourth place in the Blue Stars FIFA Youth Cup in Switzerland after posting an impressive record in the group stages.
A 2-0 defeat to Basel in the third/fourth play-off may have been a disappointing ending to the tournament but there was plenty for coach Warren Joyce to be satisfied with.
The Reds had defeated Zenit St Petersburg in the final group game to finish the pool on 10 points which, unfortunately, still was not enough to top the section. Instead, eventual winners FC Zurich went through to the final on goal difference after the 0-0 draw between the two sides on Wednesday.
Zenit's Markov opened the scoring on 11 minutes with the first goal conceded by United in the four games. Captain Tom Thorpe was booked in a competitive affair but a Januzaj double inside three minutes turned things in his side's favour.
The Belgian struck to take his tally in the competition to four, scoring all of United's goals, but it took a late Jonny Sutherland save from a free-kick to preserve the three points.
