Trip south for young Reds

Manchester United's Under-21s play their first fixture of 2014 on Monday night when making the trip to Southampton.

Warren Joyce's champions have a number of games to make up in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League and will be tested by a club with a fine tradition for producing youth talent.

The Saints sit in sixth place in the nationwide division and the match will not be live on MUTV because of redevelopment work being undertaken at the Staplewood Training Ground.

For the Reds, Uruguayan full-back Guillermo Varela has been granted compassionate leave but a host of players have returned from loan and could be available, even as over-aged additions.

The last outing against Arsenal featured a younger line-up but the likes of James Wilson, Saidy Janko and Andreas Pereira might be saved for the FA Youth Cup tie at Leicester City on Thursday.
