James Wilson could be doubtful for Manchester United Under-21s' key clash against Chelsea at Leigh Sports Village on Friday night.
The prolific striker was withdrawn during the Lancashire Senior Cup exit to Bolton Wanderers with a hip injury and coach Warren Joyce admitted afterwards the problem would need to be assessed. Wilson is one of the few forwards available with Jesse Lingard, Nick Powell, Will Keane, Angelo Henriquez, Federico Macheda, Tom Lawrence, Jack Barmby and Sam Byrne all out on loan.
Tom Thorpe shrugged off an early knock on Monday to complete a full 90 minutes as captain on his return to action after ankle ligament damage curtailed a loan spell at Birmingham City.
"We thought we would see how long he could get out of it and he felt okay so we kept him on for the full game," explained Joyce to MUTV. "He did really well on his Birmingham debut but we're not blessed with lots of players left for the end of the season so it's good to see him back."
Charni Ekangamene, who is still on loan with Carlisle United, featured in midfield after previous outings at centre-half while Davide Petrucci has missed the last couple of fixtures.
With a top-four finish essential to maintain interest in the competition, United are in sixth spot after a run of four successive wins with Chelsea in fourth with a game in hand on the Reds.
