Wilson completed his treble with a thumping drive after some classic wing-play by Janko led to the ball breaking to the deadly striker inside the area. The England Under-19 international was given a good round of applause when he was withdrawn for debutant Tosin Kehinde late on and it was thoroughly deserved.

Paddy McNair and Louis Rowley also made their first starts in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League and left-back Reece James wore the captain's armband.

United: Amos; Varela, McNair, Ekangamene, James; Janko, Pearson, Rothwell, A.Pereira (Weir 65), Rowley; Wilson (Kehinde 86). Subs not used: Rudge, Gollini, Harrop.
