U21s out to retain trophy

Manchester United welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford for the Barclays Under-21 Premier League final on Wednesday night, with free entry for all supporters.

The Reds, who finished in fourth place in the table behind the overall leaders from Stamford Bridge, have the chance to retain the trophy on home soil because the Londoners' pitch was unavailable.

Andreas Pereira's wonder-strike settled the semi-final against Liverpool at Anfield to set up another memorable occasion for Warren Joyce’s side, following Chelsea’s penalty shootout success over Manchester City in the other last-four tie.

Tom Lawrence started on Merseyside after returning from a loan spell at Yeovil Town, while Michael Keane could be an option if Joyce decides to bolster his central defence, which has been marshalled manfully by midfielders Charni Ekangamene and Paddy McNair in recent weeks.

Chelsea are aiming to follow up their dramatic victory in the FA Youth Cup final against neighbours Fulham and have a host of players returning from loans who might enter the equation.

"Chelsea are a good side," Joyce told MUTV. "The money they have spent on youngsters is phenomenal but they do it very well and have got some good players in the youth set-up and Under-21s. It will be a tough game for us.

"But I’m not really thinking about Chelsea too much. It’s more about having control of our team and making sure we do everything we possibly can right on the night.

"I think it would be a massive one to win this year," he accepted. "Obviously, we’ve won it the last two years and got beaten in the final before that. With all the problems that have been around this year, just to get this far is a massive achievement.
