Sam Johnstone was the FA Youth Cup-winning team's goalkeeper in 2011 and is highly thought of within Old Trafford and beyond.
After being capped at a number of levels for England, the Preston-born player followed up a loan move to Oldham at the start of the 2011/2012 season with a switch to Scunthorpe on a temporary basis (September 2011 to January 2012) in order to obtain first-team experience.
Tall, athletic and very agile, he commands his area with authority and is a fine shot stopper.
Since making his international bow in the Under-16s against Scotland in November 2008, he has
worked himself up to the Under-19 level with his country - competing alongside the Keane twins and Tom Thorpe in the qualifiers in May 2012.
A wonderful performance against Aston Villa in the Barclays Premier Reserve League play-off final at Old Trafford further enhanced his growing reputation as he saved three penalties in the shoot-out and deservedly earned the Man of the Match award.
He made 10 appearances for the Reserves in total and seems to be maturing nicely, captaining the England Under-19s during their qualification for the European Championship finals.
