In a series of youth team interviews, ManUtd.com meets U18s goalkeeper Ben Amos...
Strengths: Aerially I challenge well for the ball and I think I’ve got good agility, positioning and reading of the game. My general shot-stopping is quite strong and I try to organise the defence in front of me.
Ways I can improve: I’m working on taking crosses – trying to attack the ball. But the main thing is my kicking distance, which is something I work on in my spare time, mainly it’s accuracy over long distances.
A player at the club I admire: I’ve worked with a lot of goalkeepers here like Tom Heaton and Tommy Lee, who went to Macclesfield, and also Tim Howard. All through the age groups people will give you advice. A lot of them have been through what I’m going through now, so they help me out.
Life at United: I’ve been a fan since my earliest memory. My whole family is United. I was released from Crewe when I was ten and joined when I was eleven. I’ve not looked back.
I first got spotted: When I was at Crewe I played in goal for them and outfield for a local team. It got to the last game of the season and we had to beat the top-of-the-table side to win the league. I’d been playing centre midfield all season for the local team, but our goalkeeper got injured so I went in goal. We got a penalty and I’d been our penalty taker all season, so I went up and took it. We won 3-2 and won the league. When I got in the car to go home, my mum and dad told me a United scout wanted to take me for trials. But I nearly hadn't make that game at all. We got lost trying to find the ground. We were about to give up and go home, but we somehow stumbled across it.
In five years I will be: I’m always setting myself targets. Hopefully I’ll be fighting it out for a first-team place. That’s my aim, to play for the club. I wouldn’t be here otherwise. I have to go for it as best I can. If I can’t make it here I’d love to play in the Premiership.
Describe yourself in three words: Determined. Ambitious. Confident.
Best moment in football so far: Up there would be making my debut
